In this special extended interview, we sit down with Alan Cash, former Chairman and long-serving figure at Macclesfield Town, to look back on an extraordinary period in the history of the Silkmen.
Alan was at the heart of the club during one of its most significant eras. He succeeded the late Arthur Jones as chairman and was in charge when Macclesfield Town achieved promotion to the Football League in 1997 and then remarkably won promotion again in 1997/98. Contemporary Parliamentary records name Alan as chairman during that historic second promotion season.
We are releasing this interview to coincide with the anniversary of the death of Arthur Jones, who passed away on 19 September 1996. Arthur had overseen Macclesfield’s 1994/95 Conference title and the 1996 FA Trophy triumph, and his death came at a hugely difficult moment in the club’s history.
Alan talks about Arthur, the challenges that followed his death, the people who helped keep the club going, the journey into the Football League and his memories from decades behind the scenes at the Moss Rose. His association with the club extended far beyond his time as chairman; a 2017 tribunal judgment recorded that he had been involved in football for 46 years and had held several senior positions at Macclesfield Town.
This is an opportunity to hear the story from somebody who was there — and to remember Arthur Jones and the contribution he made to Macclesfield Town Football Club.
