IBR: SOUTHPORT TEST “KEEPS THE FIRE IN THE STOMACH”

After Saturday’s narrow 2 – 1 defeat at Oxford City, Macc’s goalscorer Isaac Buckley-Ricketts, spoke to Silkmen TV to give his version of events.

After a high-flying start to the season at home to Worksop the previous Saturday, the Silkmen stuttered on the road as they came up against a tenacious Oxford opposition, who on the day ultimately emerged as the better side.

Despite falling two goals behind, Isaac inspired a late comeback charge, as he pulled one back for Macc twelve minutes from time, with his first goal for the Club since signing in the summer. When speaking to Silkmen TV, the winger was keen to add “a team like ours is always going to keep pushing” as they dug deep to try and find a leveller in the closing stages of the game.

Buckley-Ricketts also expressed his frustration at going behind and finding themselves with a mountain to climb as he described Oxford’s position to be one of authority as “once they take an early lead, they can just sit in and defend”.

Isaac celebrates his first goal for the Club with Luis Lacey on Saturday.

Isaac also acknowledged the need for the team to “start games stronger and not give the other team the momentum through a one or two goal lead, which only makes the hill steeper”.

Having gone into the break a goal down, Macc’s number 7 accepted that “the intensity wasn’t up to par” and despite providing the goal to get the Silkmen back into the game “when you leave it as late as that it’s always going to be difficult”.

Despite having lost the game, Buckley-Ricketts believed his first goal in blue was “a positive but a bittersweet moment as it’s my first goal for the Club” but was quick to add “its a team game and we didn’t win” and was naturally disappointed with the end result.

Saturday’s defeat aside, Isaac was glad of the immediate opportunity to right wrongs at Southport this evening, explaining “it keeps the fire in the stomach” having two games in quick succession and that hopefully the Silkmen would be able to get back on track with another three points at Haig Avenue.
