Macclesfield FC are delighted to have captured the signature of young full-back Luke Matheson following his departure from Bolton Wanderers.
Luke, who has had a remarkable start to his career, joins The Silkmen following a most recent two-year spell with EFL League One side Bolton, and a successful trial period at the Leasing.com Stadium in the Club’s last two pre-season fixtures.
Matheson began his career at Rochdale, where he stormed onto the scene with a memorable goal against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup at the age of 16 in 2019.
The now 22-year-old quickly caught the eye of Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers, who snapped him up following his breakthrough season with Rochdale, before loaning him back to The Dale, immediately spotting the potential in the youngster.
Equally acknowledging his capabilities from an early age, Luke was called up to the England U17 and U18 sides in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
Matheson also had a loan spell at the then top-flight side Ipswich Town, before broadening his horizons in search of regular first-team game time at Hamilton Academical, and Scunthorpe United, before joining The Trotters in 2023.
Having enjoyed a two-year stint in the Wanderers B team and occasional first-team minutes, Luke again went looking for regular men’s football, featuring on loan at Irish side Bohemians and most recently for fellow National League North side Alfreton Town.
The Silkmen are delighted to have Luke on board ahead of our debut season in the Enterprise National League North.
Luke will be sponsored by SAS Daniels and you can learn more about all they offer by visiting www.sasdaniels.co.uk.
