Macclesfield FC are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder George Wilson, following his departure from AFC Fylde!
Wilson played a pivotal role in the Coasters’ automatic promotion to the Enterprise National League this season, featuring in 41 of their 46 league games, grabbing three goals and recording three assists from his central position.
The 25 year-old was reluctantly released at the culmination of the 2025/26 campaign upon the expiry of his initial one year contract. The Silkmen immediately registered their interest in the midfielder, who was equally as quick to show a willingness to join Macc’s journey, with the aim of repeating the same feat achieved with Fylde this season.
Wilson previously enjoyed a season long spell in the division above for local rivals Altrincham under Phil Parkinson, from which the Coasters snapped up Wilson. Prior to which he also played a starring role in Coalville’s 2022/23 Southern Premier Central season, in which they reached the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup, facing then EFL League One side Charlton Athletic, whilst narrowly missing out on automatic promotion merely via goal difference, before losing on penalties in the play-offs.
George began life in football at Blackburn Rovers, where he progressed through the ranks in the academy to the U18’s at Brockhall Village. The youngster continued studying at Loughborough University whilst balancing his playing career before making a bold move abroad early on in his career to Swedish side Ljungskile SK, where he made 19 appearances and scored two goals, ahead of returning home to join Coalville.
George is known to play in a more defensive midfield role by trade, though can play anywhere across the midfield as a stereotypical box-to-box style player, and in defence if required, with a versatile and composed approach to play, subsequently making a positive impression in both league fixtures against the Silkmen this season, grabbing the fourth of Fylde’s five goals in the game at Mill Farm.
Wilson becomes John Rooney’s first summer signing to provide the Silkmen with the services showcased for this season’s league winners under Craig Mahon, and utilise the valuable experience and know-how gained to secure successive promotions to the Enterprise National League.
Everyone at Macclesfield FC would like to give George a very warm welcome to the Leasing.com Stadium and wish him lots of luck for his spell with us in the 2026/27 Enterprise National League North campaign.
Our first interview with George will be available to view shortly on the Club’s website, YouTube and social media channels.
Wilson will officially become a Macclesfield FC player upon the expiry of his contract and the opening of the registration window on Wednesday 1st July.
