MATCH REPORT: FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER

Sam Heathcote’s strike from distance helped secure all three points for Michael Clegg’s side to increase Macclesfield’s chances of promotion.

Heathcote put the game to bed in the 67th minute when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box after a cross was not cleared by the away side.

He hit the ball along the ground from distance which pierced the back of the net and put the home side two goals ahead.

Laurent Mendy scored the opener in the 21st minute after a well worked corner was not cleared by the Reds’ defence.

The Silkmen’s number seven struck the ball powerfully on the half volley from inside the box which the keeper was unable to react to in time.

Mendy was also involved in the team’s second when he ran into the right side of the box and passed to the inform Kane Drummond.

Drummond’s strike flew into the top right corner beyond George Murray-Jones’ reach to give Macclesfield the lead.

United of Manchester equalised in the 46th minute after Dontai Gabidon squared the ball to Jal Palinkas who poked the ball in the goal.

Drummond had multiple opportunities in the game including a great ball from Tunde Owolabi which the Silkmen’s number nine almost took advantage of.

At full stretch, Drummond was able to poke the ball towards the goal, but Murray-Jones saved the well worked chance.

Paul Dawson had a standout performance and was dominant in midfield throughout the entire game which frustrated the opposition and earned him the man of the match award.

The Reds came close to grabbing an equaliser earlier in the first half when the ball fell to Gabidon who fired the ball from close range but was off target.

This is the Silkmen’s fourth win on the bounce following their away victory against Ashton United on Tuesday which Clegg will hope to carry through to the next game.

This result leaves Macclesfield third in the league with a game in hand over second placed Warrington Rylands who are only one point ahead.
