MATCH REPORT: MATLOCK TOWN

10 Jan 2024 | Latest News, Match Report

Two second half goals from Alex Curran and Tre Pemberton was enough for the Silkmen to defeat Matlock Town.

The first half saw very little chances between the two sides, but it was the hosts who came the closest to opening the scoring through Ioan Evans who had a header saved by Dylan Berry from point blank range.

The deadlock was broken by Curran in the 53rd minute with a shot from 20 yards out beating Saul Deeney at his near post. Not long after the opening goal Macclesfield doubled their lead through a counterattack that was finished off by Pemberton after receiving the ball from Kane Drummond.

Macclesfield pushed for a third goal and with 20 minutes left to play Drummond almost scored but his effort was held well by the Matlock goalkeeper.

Matlock halved the deficit was seven minutes left of normal time to play with a freekick scored by Joe West from 25 yards out.

Despite pressure late on from the hosts Macclesfield held on to secure all three points.

New signing Drew Baker made his debut, manager Alex Bruce said: “Brandon was ill, and he went down in the warm up so to make a last minute tweak was not ideal but: “Drew came in for his debut and I thought he was excellent.

“You can see that he is a good player and is a good asset to have.”

Ahead of the game Bruce made a number of changes from the side that was defeated at home against Lancaster City with Laurent Mendy back in defence and Alex Curran back in the starting 11 after his injury.

The victory sees Macclesfield move up to fourth place ahead of Hyde United and one point behind second place Warrington Rylands.

Macclesfield are in Isuzu FA Trophy action this weekend as they welcome National League side Dorking Wanderers to The Leasing.com Stadium on Saturday.

Macclesfield: Berry, Pemberton, Baker, Fensome, Mendy, Dawson (80), Drummond, Owolabi (87), Curran, Rooney, Duffy

Subs: Kengni, Murphy (80), Heathcote, Hurst (87)
