MATCH REPORT: Stafford Rangers

25 Sep 2023 | Latest News

Second half goals from Tom Peers and Alex Curran ensured that Macclesfield took all three points on Saturday afternoon against Stafford Rangers.

The Silkmen had a good chance to build some momentum after last Saturday’s victory over Buxton in the FA cup.

The first period was filled with frustration for the home side, who struggled to break through the low block of Rangers.

It took until the 24th minute for the first big chance of the game. Alex Curran had a curled effort saved by Joel Torrance before John Rooney had one stopped himself at point blank range.

Macclesfield maintained control of the game but struggled to make that all important breakthrough and Rangers held firm until halftime.

The Silkmen began the second half just how they ended the first, and Neil Kengni had a fantastic opportunity to put the hosts in front in the 60th minute.

Laurent Mendy picked the ball up in midfield and delivered an outstanding pass into the path of Kengni, who strode towards goal and just missed the target by a whisker.

But the deadlock was finally broken just three minutes later as substitute Tom Peers scored to put Macclesfield into the lead.

Alex Curran’s shot from inside the box rattled the crossbar, and Peers was on hand to poke home the rebound and put The Silkmen in front.

The game seemed to open up after the goal, and the away side looked to strike back, but struggled to create any clear cut chances.

Macclesfield had chances to seal the game, and Peers could have had a brace if not for an exceptional save from Torrance, who kept his team in the game on multiple occasions.

But the three points were secured in the 90th minute when Curran made it two-nil with a calm and composed finish after being slipped through by Kane Drummond.

The Silkmen travel to llkeston in midweek in a bid to chase down early league leaders Radcliffe, before a massive FA cup tie next Saturday back at home against Warrington Rylands
