Alex Curran’s penalty secured all three points for Macclesfield despite last minute efforts from the visitors who lost their first away game this season.

The Silkmen’s leading goal scorer, Curran continued his great run of form with a powerful finish from the penalty spot.

The strike flew into the bottom right corner out of the Whitby goalkeeper Shane Bland’s reach to give Macclesfield a two-goal lead.

Neil Kengni won the penalty in the 31st minute after he was brought to the ground by the Whitby defence making a dangerous run into the box.

John Rooney opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after the attacking midfielder turned his body under pressure inside the box and struck the ball into the back of the net.

Whitby came close to an equaliser multiple times near the end of the game, including an effort which was cleared by Dylan Berry who clawed the ball away from the goal.

Junior Mondal pulled one back in the 35th minute after Connor Simpson, who was substituted on only 15 minutes earlier, played the ball into the box to the attacker who hit the back of the net.

Whitby Town almost conceded another goal early in the second half when Bland received the ball inside the six-yard box surrounded by Macclesfield players.

A well-timed sliding tackle by Luke Duffy took the ball away from the goalkeeper almost ending up in the goal.

The Silkmen started the game on the front foot coming close to scoring in the opening 15 minutes.

Kengni made a darting run on the wing and sent the ball into the box which found its way to Rooney whose effort was cleared off the line.

Alex Bruce’s side looked dangerous throughout the game on the right side of the pitch with Rooney and Kengni causing problems for the oppositions back line.
