On this day in 2021, Macclesfield FC headed to Winsford United for their first ever away game in the North West Counties Premier Division, concluding in a 4-4 draw after a goal-fest at the Barnton Stadium.
Buoyed by the 1-0 victory on our return to action the Saturday prior against Burscough, thanks to Leon Arnasalam’s 16th minute strike, the Silkmen went in search of a second successive league victory on the road at Winsford United three days later.
The line-up for our first ever away game was as follows:
Ben Pierce; Curtis Obeng, Aaron Fleming, Ekow Coker, Tom Stead; Leon Arnasalam, Sidi Fofana Sanogo, Kieran Curtis, Laurent Mendy, Aaron Dwyer; Tom Clare,
Tom Clare got us off to the best possible start, putting us in front from the spot inside two minutes before doubling our lead six minutes later. The two goal cushion didn’t phase the hosts however as they responded via Daniel Boden in the 33rd minute, and again five minutes later through Matthew Bowland with United then aiming to go in to the break all square, though Clare completed his hat-trick on the brink of the interval to edge Macc back ahead.
Joe Duckworth would draw Winsford back level just eleven minutes after the restart, though his leveller was cancelled out once more by Tom, who clinched his and Macc’s fourth goal of the evening twelve minutes later. Taking the lead for third time would only last 100 seconds though as Duckworth made it a brace to deny the Silkmen a historic first win on the road.
