Four second half goals for the Silkmen as they beat Basford United to remain top of the Northern Premier League.

The first goal of the afternoon was just five minutes into the game when D’Mani Mellor chased after a pass back to the Basford goalkeeper and his clearance was blocked by Mellor who tapped the ball into the empty goal.

Basford almost got back into the game midway into the half through Ash Chambers who was one on one with Max Dearnley, but his effort was straight at the Macclesfield keeper.

Basford equalised 10 minutes before half time through Jordan Hallam from the centre of the goal. Both sides pushed for the next goal but the scoreline remained the same going into half-time.

Seven minutes into the second half the visitors were awarded a corner which was played short to Luke Duffy who passed it back to John Rooney and from the resulting cross captain Paul Dawson headed the ball home at the back post as he scored his sixth goal of the season.

Five minutes later Rooney turned from provided to goal scorer with a long-range effort just outside the box.

Substitute Lewis Fensome added a fourth goal for Macclesfield as he tapped in from close range following a Rooney cross.

The final goal of the afternoon came from Edy Maieco in the first minute of additional time after reacting first to a rebound on the edge of the Basford area.

Following ten league games the win has set a new record of having the best league record after ten games which dates back to 1931 when that side went on to win the Cheshire League for the first time in the club’s history.

The Silkmen are at the Leasing.com stadium on Tuesday night as they host Gainsborough Trinity United in the league.

Macclesfield: Dearnley, Pemberton, Kengi, Rooney, Mendy, Heathcote (42), Johnson (71), Dawson (85), Mellor, Curran (46), Duffy (82).

Subs: Fensome (42), Maieco (71), Duffus (82), Clare (85), Elliott (46).
