A brace from Danny Elliott and a goal from Justin Johnson as Macclesfield beat City of Liverpool in the Isuzu FA Trophy.

A goalless first half saw limited chances between the two sides with Courtney Duffus almost breaking the deadlock, but his header went over the crossbar. City of Liverpool almost took the lead just before halftime, but Max Dearnley saved the shot from Elliot Morris.

Head coach Robbie Savage made three changes early in the second half with his side on the hunt for a goal as he brought on John Rooney, Justin Johnson and Danny Elliott.

Just before the hour mark, D’Mani Mellor thought he had opened the scoring for The Silkmen, but his effort was cleared off the line.

Substitute Danny Elliott broke the deadlock with 22 minutes left of normal time to play after some clever footwork from the forward and his right footed effort went into the bottom left corner.

Elliott scored his second goal of the game eight minutes later after Lewis Fensome played the ball into his path for Elliott to score this time with his left foot.

The final goal of the game came with 10 minutes of normal time to play when Justin Johnson received a long ball from John Rooney and his first touch allowed the ball to sit up nicely for the substitute who hit the ball into the roof of the goal.

Next up for Savage and his side is the Fourth Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup as they face National League side Tamworth away.

Macclesfield: Dearnley, Fensome, Kengni, Whitehead (83) , Mendy, Heathcote, Maieco (64), Curran (55), Mellor, Duffus (55), Gabidon (55).

Subs: Rooney (55), Duffy (64), Johnson 55), Savage (83), Elliott (55)
