Two first half goals as Macclesfield beat Gainsborough Trinty at home and remain top of the Northern Premier League.

Gainsborough Trinity almost broke the deadlock just two minutes into the game on the counter through Declan Howe, but Silkmen keeper Max Dearley ensured it would stay goalless with a save.

Forward Luke Duffy opened the scoring for Macclesfield after a quick free kick from John Rooney to D’Mani Mellor and his effort was sabed but the ball fell to Duffy who tapped the ball into the empty goal.

The second goal of the game came just after the half hour mark when captain Paul Dawson was fouled just inside the box. Danny Elliott stepped up and hit the ball into the bottom right corner to double the lead.

Macclesfield had very few chances in the second half, but the best opportunity fell to Duffy with just over 10 minutes left of normal time to play but his effort fizzed just wide of the goal.

Gainsborough pushed for a way back into the game late on, but the Silkmen held on to secure all three points and continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Tre Pemberton made it a century of appearances in the game and Laurent Mendy is the first Macclesfield FC player to bring up 150 appearances for the club.

The Silkmen are at the Leasing.com stadium on Saturday as they take on Witton Albion in the Third Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Macclesfield: Dearnley, Pemberton, Kengi (72), Rooney, Mendy, Fensome, Johnson (72), Dawson, Mellor, Elliott (65), Duffy.

Subs: Gabidon (72), Maieco (72), Duffus, Clare, Curran (65).
