Macclesfield FC moved another step closer to their destiny after picking up a 4-0 win away to Morpeth Town.
The Highwaymen came close to breaking the deadlock as after a mistake from Paul Dawson, Sam Hodgson ran through on goal and squared the ball across to Jack Foalle, who couldn’t convert his chance.
Inside 25 minutes, a Morpeth corner almost led to a goal as the ball scrambled around the Macclesfield box, which was eventually cleared off the line, giving Max Dearnley a sigh of relief.
In the 29th minute, Luke Duffy’s headed opportunity was remarkably saved by Dan Langley to keep the game at 0-0.
Eight minutes later, Sean Etaluku was denied by Langley as his low shot was parried out for a corner.
The Silkmen eventually took the lead when John Rooney delivered a brilliant cross from a corner, finding Laurent Mendy, who headed in his first goal of the season.
Just before half time, Danny Elliott took advantage of a defensive error as Josh King’s attempted clearance came off the shin of the striker, looping the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net.
The second half proved vital for Robbie Savage’s side as they wanted to keep their lead to confirm the league title, depending on other results.
10 minutes into the second 45, Luke Duffy increased their two-goal cushion to three after receiving a delightful pass before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.
The travelling side were not out of goals just yet as with 20 minutes left to play, Elliott was brought down by Rhys Evans inside the penalty area.
The Silkmen’s goal-scorer earned himself a brace as he tucked the ball into the bottom right corner from 12 yards.
The league leaders need just one more win which will secure their status as Northern Premier League Champions.
Macclesfield return to the Leasing.com Stadium where they take on Bamber Bridge on Saturday.
