Captain Paul Dawson scores twice as Macclesfield reach the third qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup after beating National League North side South Shields 5-0 at The Leasing.com Stadium.

Twelve minutes into the game, the hosts took an early lead when forward Justin Johnson was fouled on the edge of the box and from the resulting free kick, captain Paul Dawson curled the ball into the back of the South Shields goal.

Ten minutes before half time Dawson got his second of the match beating the offside trap after receiving a long ball from John Rooney and he placed the ball into the goal as he picked up his fifth FA Cup goal of the season.

Alex Curran almost extended the lead, but his effort was well saved by the visiting keeper with two minutes left of the half.

Macclesfield keeper Max Dearnley was forced into an early save three minutes into the second half as he denied Aidan Rutledge.

Right back Tre Pemberton scored the third goal of the game after reacting to a D’Mani Mellor shot that was saved but Pemberton was there to follow up and tap it into the corner six minutes into the half.

Just after the hour mark, Johnson added another to the Silkmen total after receiving a ball from Mellor and his effort went into the top right corner.

The final goal of the game was in the first minute of additional time as substitute Edy Maieco went past two South Shield defenders and his low left footed effort went into the corner of the goal.

Next up for Macclesfield and it is a return to league action as they take on FC United of Manchester away on Tuesday night.

Macclesfield: Dearnley, Pemberton, Lee, Mendy, Heathcote, Dawson (75), Rooney, Johnson (75), Mellor (83), Curran (65), Duffy (83)

Subs: Fensome (75), Scott, Savage, Kengni (75), Maieco (83), Duffus (83), Elliott (65)
