SAVAGE: “IT COULD HAVE BEEN DOUBLE FIGURES”

Post-Match thoughts from Head Coach Robbie Savage after The Silkmen beat Lancaster City at the Leasing.com Stadium.

Lancaster City defeated Macclesfield in the league twice last season, and there was almost a sense of deja vu as The Dolly Blues opened the scoring within four first-half minutes.

Savage said: “They deservedly beat us on two occasions last year three nil and two one, credit them I thought they came with a good game plan.

“The goal after four minutes, we’ve got to do better defensively and have that desire to stop crosses, but it is a great ball in and a great header.”

Savage expressed that his side did not get going in the match specifically the first 15 minutes of the game and admitted it will be tough in the reverse fixture.

Despite the margin of victory Savage admitted his side were dysfunctional.

He said: “There is fine margins with us as a management team because you go in two one up with us not playing well and then we come out in the second half and were brilliant.

“Duffy’s cross, Danny Elliott could have had four and let’s be fair, again it could have been double figures. But credit them I thought they were very good and caused lots of problems.”

This season five substitutions were introduced, Savage said:” The five subs have really helped us this year, you feel part of it.

“I go back to my playing days; I wasn’t a sub very often but when I was I always felt part of it when you got on.

“The mentality of this group whether you are in the Starting XI, on the bench or part of the squad you are all in it together. They’ve got such a great comradery and togetherness, lots of questions are being asked about us.”

The lead at the top of the table increased to 13 points but Savage expressed the importance of stating humble.

He stated: “We have to approach every game as if we have to win it. To lose to Tamworth and congratulations to them for last night. Watching at home and seeing the long throw, they were brilliant, and I am delighted they won.

“But you just think if we could replay that game, especially here, but we didn’t. It is about the league and to react the way we have by winning the games we have had.

“We have to prepare right for Morpeth, we all want to continue this amazing run.”

With the five goals today, it meant the silkmen have scored 15 this week, Savage said: “I’ve brought goals into the football club, signing Danny Elliott, signing JJ. It takes quite a bit of adjusting due to the size of the crowd and the pressure.”

It is the Cheshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night and Savage urged Macclesfield fans to get behind his younger side when they take on Stalybridge Celtic.
