Post match thoughts from Head Coach Robbie Savage after The Silkmen beat National League North side Curzon Ashton in the second round of the Isuzu FA Trophy.

Savage made changes for the game he said: “When people saw the team, they probably thought they have given them opportunities but the lads in that dressing room, each and every one of them deserve opportunities.”

He continued: “We have come to a fantastic football club who are flying in the league above, we made four changes to our Starting XI. We left Mendy out of the squad, and they’ve come out here and we have won against a team that if they win their game in hand, they go top.

“That says everything you need to know about that group, I have always said it, whatever happens from here they have the belief, the consistency and the desire to get results.”

Savage admitted his side were second best in the second half and that Ashton deserved to get the equaliser.

The Silkmen Head Coach was not happy with the tackles that happened during the game and pointed out an injury to Luke Duffy but expressed that he wants officials to be consistent.

Savage did not see the game as an upset with The Silkmen being in a division below he said: “We were favourites in my eyes, we are favourites in every game we play both home and away against National League and National League North sides no question we are favourites and we showed that today.

“We have come away again to a fantastic football club with a fantastic manager, good staff and beat them. That group there deserve all the credit. Not me, the management staff Bandy, John, all the coaches it is that group that keep pushing each other.”

Savage has introduced a senior leadership group who he talks too which includes Danny Whitehead who captained during the match. He was pleased with Alex Curran who has struggled with injuries, but Savage expressed he is his biggest fan.

Savage reiterated his feelings about managing the side: “I am a non-league manager like everybody else.

“Do you know what, it is probably the best thing I have done since I retired, it’s amazing.”

On Tuesday Macclesfield travel to Mickleover FC in the league Savage expressed: “We have a league to win, this was great today but now that group in there, how relentless they want to be it is going to be tough test against Mickleover.”
