SAVAGE: “THE BEST PERFORMANCE WE’VE HAD THIS SEASON”

Post match thoughts from Head Coach Robbie Savage after his side won 7-1 at The Leasing.com Stadium against Ashton United in the first round of the Isuzu FA Trophy.

It was a busy week for Head Coach Robbie Savage who credited his team while he was away in Europe: “It has been a great week but a lot of travelling and to come back today and see that performance.

“Credit to John, Bandy and the whole team on Thursday who had the lads right at it in training, they’ve come in today and I have to say that is the best performance that we’ve had this season.”

He continued: “I have said it before, if anybody wants to go toe to toe with us and make it a real game of football that is what happens.

“Steve Cunningham is a fantastic manager, I’m sure he’ll be having a few strong words in there but when we play like that, we can beat anybody, and every single person today contributed.”

Savage was disappointed with the scoreline saying that it could have been double figures but was pleased with the statement of seven goals.

New on loan signing James Edmondson made his debut, Savage was pleased with his performance: “To be as controlled and composed on the ball, the lads in there gave him a round of applause.

“It is nice that John Eustace and Stu from Blackburn have put the trust in us with one of their high potential players and he was absolutely magnificent, and he got his goal as well.”

There was a period in the game where the Silkmen where second best but how important at the time was the third goal, Savage said: “Tre was playing as a centre half at that time and to get a goal on the near post shows how expansive we are.”

Next up for the Silkmen is a trip to Matlock on Tuesday and with performances today Savage admitted to having a headache with team selection: “What they have all done has given me a huge headache for Tuesday in a tough game against Matlock who are resurging so we know it will be a tough going there.

“They will be right up for it, everybody wants to be the first team to beat us, and I’ve said in there, you rest, you recover, and we go again because it would be a statement on the back of a 7-1 win to go to Matlock and get something and extend the lead at the top of the table.”

The next round is set to be in a few weeks, Savage is hoping for a home tie. “Teams we have played against and beaten us is who I want the team to take on and show everybody how good we are.”
