Upon signing for Macclesfield FC, Tom Wilson spoke to Silkmen TV to share his delight at getting the deal done, how it came about, what attracted him to the Club and how pre-season has treated him so far.
Tom has trained with the team as a trialist since our return to pre-season, his first port of call was a thank you to Manager John Rooney for “letting me come in and train to get my fitness back up, as well as having a look at me to see if I fitted his bill”.
Shortly following was an acknowledgment of the quality of and camaraderie in the dressing room “getting to know the lads has been class, they’re a top drawer group, it’s quite rare in football now to find a changing room like that one, I’ve really enjoyed it!”
When posed with the question of what was the biggest draw to the Club, Wilson revealed “you have to look at last season, the cup run, the league finish, the size of the Club in this league, it’s a massive, massive Club!”
Crediting Manager John Rooney with incentivising him to move to Macclesfield, Wilson added “the players he’s already got, his staff, the way he wants to play, the way he wants to be front foot, go at teams and impose ourselves on the league”
When addressing what he hoped to achieve with the Silkmen, Tom was quick to agree that promotion was the aim “100%, with the ability in that dressing room. I’ve competed at both the top and the bottom of this league, and I know that we’ve got to be pushing, we know the expectation”
Referencing his experience at this level “Over the last couple of years, I’ve learnt a lot, for good and for bad! I really feel as though I’ve gained that experience to strengthen the team”
In terms of what the Silkmen faithful can expect from the centre half, Tom’s personal opinion is “I like to be dominant, in the air, in my duals, one vs one, in both boxes. First and foremost I’m a defender that loves to defend and I’ll do everything that I possibly can to keep the ball out of our net, but I also like the ball at my feet.
Acknowledging that he’s already learnt a lot during his time on trial at the Leasing.com Stadium, an assured Wilson expressed “I’m getting to know the lads and the patterns, it takes time but I want the ball, I like to step in and break the lines, but mainly I’m a passionate defender”
Unable to gloss over the Club’s sizeable fanbase, Wilson admitted “I’ve seen a lot of clips already of how this place can be, every player wants to play in front of that support. The players have told me how passionate the fans are about the Club and I can’t wait to return that on the pitch!
