MATCH REPORT: MACCLESFIELD 4 V 3 MOSSLEY

20 Nov 2022 | Match Report

Neil Kengni sent the Leasing.com Stadium into absolute pandemonium as a manic added time period saw Macclesfield FC come from behind twice to beat Mossley right at the death.

The Silkmen had the first big chance of the game as Kengni beat several Mossley challenges before feeding James Berry who forced a smart save from Tom Watson in a one-on-one situation.

Macc had the ball in the net after Luke Murphy dispossessed the visitor’s midfield and played through Nicky Maynard, but the striker was adjudged to be just offside.

Minutes later after the disallowed strike, Macc got the breakthrough as James Berry was played through and his parried shot fell straight into the path of Mark Duffy who fired into the roof of the net.

Moments later, the hosts nearly made it two as Tre Pemberton’s disguised run into the box wasn’t tracked by the visitors, and his cut back to Alex Curran was comfortably saved by Watson.

The visitor’s first real chance of the game brought an equaliser, as Jack Bannister’s corner was met by Jack Grundy at the back post and his looping header found the far corner of the net.

David McNabb’s side had one last chance in the first period, as James Berry got in behind the visitor’s defence before pulling the ball across only for no Macc player to get a final touch.

Both teams had chances early in the second half as Alex Curran and Freddie Sass both had efforts on goal within minutes of each other.

Just before the hour mark, The Lilywhites took the lead as they countered, and the attack was finished off by the skipper Jordan Butterworth from close range.

In response to the goal, The Silkmen applied all the pressure with James Berry dictating play down the left, with the winger almost finding Kengni at the back post but the ball was taken off his head by a desperate last-minute interception.

Five minutes from time, McNabb’s side found an equaliser as Sam Grimshaw’s cross to the near post was brilliantly converted by substitute Tom Clare to level proceedings.

Almost straight after, Silkmen supporters thought their hearts were broken as Mossley scored their third as Macc failed to clear – leaving Jack Bannister at the back post to fire into the roof of the net.

Deep into added time, the Leasing.Com Stadium erupted as Tre Pemberton drove forward and his cross was tapped home by Clare for his second.

Even deeper into added time, cue absolute pandemonium as the visitors failed to clear a James Berry free-kick and the loose ball fell to the feet of Kengni who sent the Silkmen faithful into absolute raptures.

An unbelievable comeback from The Silkmen kept David McNabb’s unbeaten record as boss in tact ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Runcorn Linnets.
