Macclesfield FC were delighted to capture the services of defender Luke Matheson following a successful trial period. Matheson stormed onto the scene for Rochdale at the age of just 16, where he scored a famous goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup. He caught the attention of Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, who snapped him up following his breakthrough year at The Dale. Luke also caught the eye of national selectors as he was called up to England’s U17s and U18s in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Matheson then broadened his horizon in search of first-team football with loan spells at Ipswich Town, Hamilton Academical, and Scunthorpe United before completing a permanent switch to Bolton Wanderers. Having enjoyed a two-year stint at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, the now 22-year-old was loaned out to Bohemians in the League of Ireland, as well as now fellow National League North side Alfreton Town.
