ROBBIE SAVAGE LOOKS FORWARD TO THE UNDER-16’S CHESHIRE CUP FINAL ON SUNDAY

08 Apr 2022 | Under-16s

Ahead of Sunday afternoon’s Cheshire Cup final against Nantwich Town, Director of Football Robbie Savage has praised his under-16s side as they come up against another side looking to secure an illustrious quadruple.

The Dabbers will unquestionably prove to be tenacious opposition after enjoying a wonderful season of their own – but with the young Silkmen side brimming with confidence, there can be no doubt that they will have their sights firmly set on lifting the coveted trophy.

Here are Robbie’s thoughts ahead of the eagerly anticipated contest –

“Like us, Nantwich Town have the opportunity to claim what would be a remarkable quadruple and the Cheshire Cup final this Sunday is something I personally cannot wait for.

“The competition has represented an immense effort from the lads to get to the final – particularly due to the fact that no JPL players are allowed to take part.

“We have reached the final with a squad of just eleven players and due to the rules imposed on both teams, we will have just eleven players eligible ahead of Sunday’s game.

“Most of our defenders play in the JPL – so to say that we have had to face challenges really is an understatement!

“The way that the lads have adapted has been incredible – we have had to play centre-forwards at centre-half and wingers at full-back for example – so it is testament to this unbelievable group of players that they have reached this stage of the competition and in such emphatic style.

“The trust and belief that these young boys have – both in themselves and in everyone around them, has been something very humbling to see.

“Nantwich are a great side and I am fully aware that we will go into the game as underdogs – but our lads have shown so many times before that this does not faze them – not even for a second.

“I love that passion and defiance, so it should be a really entertaining match between two talented sides who want to end the season on a real high.

“I am just hoping that I don’t get a phone call on Saturday night to tell me that one of the lads can’t play and we are down to ten!

“I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed in that regard and would urge everyone to come down to support the lads if they are able to.”

The final will be played at Vauxhall Motors’ van Eupen Arena, with kick-off set for 14:00.

In the event of a tie at the end of ninety minutes, the game will be decided by a penalty shoot-out competition.
