LUKE MURPHY SIGNS FOR THE SILKMEN

28 Aug 2022 | First Team

Macclesfield FC are thrilled to announce the signing of former Crewe Alexandra, Leeds United and Bolton Wanderers midfielder Luke Murphy, who has agreed terms with his hometown Club.

Luke progressed through Crewe Alexandra’s illustrious Academy – making his senior debut for The Railwaymen in a 1 – 0 victory against Swindon Town back in December 2008.

Over a five-year period, Luke would go on to make 161 appearances for the Cheshire outfit and was installed as Club Captain.

Having led the Club to promotion via the play-offs in 2012, Luke then led Crewe to Football League Trophy glory twelve months later.

Named in the PFA League One Team of the Season, Luke also claimed the Club’s Player of the Year award before signing for Leeds United in the summer of 2013.

Murphy made his debut against Brighton & Hove Albion on 3 August 2013 where he scored a dramatic 94th-minute winner to give Leeds a 2 – 1 victory.

The tenacious midfielder went on to make over a century of appearances for the Yorkshire side – as well as enjoying an extended loan period at Burton Albion.

Luke then signed for Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2018, before returning to Gresty Road two years later.

Reappointed as Club Captain, Murphy would make another 78 appearances for The Railwaymen and despite being released last summer, has continued to train with the Club in order to maintain his fitness levels.

We would like to welcome Luke to the Leasing.com Stadium and will be catching up with the 32-year-old to discuss the move shortly.
