MATHESON’S FIRST MACC YEAR

One year ago, today, Luke Matheson joined the Silkmen. In recognition, we look back on Luke’s first year at the Leasing.com Stadium.

The 23 year-old full back joined the Silkmen last summer after a successful period on trial at the Leasing.com Stadium, featuring in a number of pre-season fixtures before agreeing terms just before the start of the 2025/26 Enterprise National League North season. Matheson joined the Club with a wealth of experience at what is still a relatively young age of 22 having begun his career in professional football at the age of just 16.

Matheson’s signature followed Carlos Dos Santos’, becoming John Rooney’s fifth summer signing with the new campaign fast approaching, the right back quickly became a mainstay in Rooney’s side, featuring from the off in our opening game of the season against Worksop Town.

Luke rotated with Lewis Fensome for the opening five games of the season, with each player featuring in the game most suited to them before disaster struck when Matheson suffered a major hamstring injury set-back away at Spennymoor Town before the close of August, which would see him sidelined through until December.

After what was both a physically and mentally tough period away from the pitch spanning almost four months, Matheson worked tirelessly to get himself back match fit before the turn of the year, deservedly re-taking his place in the side before the turn of the year away at South Shields in the Isuzu FA Trophy.

Luke’s return to the side would be staggered across the next four to six weeks, ensuring every precaution was taking to avoid re-injury before returning to the starting eleven regularly again in January, featuring in both the Crystal Palace and Brentford Emirates FA Cup games and going on to make a total of 34 appearances, largely in the second half of the season, contributing with a healthy number of assists and what was a deserved, but ultimately a consolation goal eventually coming away at Kidderminster Harriers in the play-off semi-final.

Following the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign, Luke agreed terms to remain with the Silkmen for at least another season and is looking forward to another exciting season here at the Leasing.com Stadium.

Everyone at Macclesfield FC would like to congratulate Luke on what has been a really impressive first season for the Club and hope that despite another brief setback experienced in pre-season, he can continue his great run of form and excel once again next season.
