Macclesfield FC are delighted to have retained the services of Luke Matheson for the 2026/27 Enterprise National League North season!
The flying full-back joined the Silkmen last summer ahead of the 2025/26 campaign following his release from Bolton Wanderers, and has performed exceptionally prior to and since a long-term set back, which has since seen him agree to remain a Macc man for next season!
The now 23 year-old began his senior career at the age of just 15 with Rochdale, making a name for himself within 12 months courtesy of a famous winning goal in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford, kick-starting his life in professional football as he went on to play for the likes of then Premier League outfits Wolves and Ipswich, during which time he also had loan spells at Hamilton Academical and Scunthorpe, before joining Bolton on a permanent basis in 2023.
Despite his move to the Wanderers, Matheson’s game time was limited by unfortunate injuries, resulting in loan moves to Bohemians and Alfreton Town before being signed up by John Rooney last year, who put his faith in the well-known full back to surpass expectations in the Enterprise National League North.
Almost immediately joining the Silkmen, Luke enjoyed a spritely start to his time in blue with a run in the team, beginning in pre-season and continuing in to the first game of the season at home to Worksop, though brought to an abrupt end by a significant hamstring injury away at Spennymoor Town at the end of August. The set-back kept the full-back out of the side for the best part of four months before returning to the starting XI in our Isuzu FA Trophy victory against South Shields to a standing ovation from the travelling Silkmen faithful.
The young defender’s return to fitness had required a great deal of patience, mental strength and detailed rehab, which was handled excellently by Macc’s backroom staff and appreciated greatly by Matheson, who has since gone on to have an excellent second half of the season, retaining his place in the side for the majority of the remaining fixtures with 34 appearances in total, impressing on each and every occasion, boasting both excellent defensive and attacking capabilities. Luke also scored the first of what could’ve been plenty more goals if not for unselfish play away at Kidderminster Harriers in the play-off semi-final.
Luke too has presented excellent personable skills both on and off the field, battling hard but fair on the pitch and remaining level headed and considerate on the other side of the white line. Regular contributions to Club life have also been recognised including public appearances and visits with the CST, becoming a respected coach in the Youth Academy and supporting back-room staff with keeping communal areas tidy.
Everyone at Macclesfield FC is delighted to have retained Luke’s services for another season and wish him well in our second season in the Enterprise National League North.
