Macclesfield FC are delighted to announce the signing of former Manchester United defender Tom Thorpe, after he agreed terms with the Club earlier today.
The 30-year-old came through the Academy at Old Trafford and went on to sign his first professional contract with The Red Devils back in the summer of 2010.
Captaining United’s illustrious youth team that included the likes of Paul; Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Ravel Morrison, Tom led the side to the Reserve League title as well as an Under-18s league championship and FA Youth Cup success.
In addition to an array of domestic honours, Tom also was capped by England at every age level from Under-16s to Under-21s and was part of the side that won the UEFA European U-17 Championships in 2010.
After being an ever-present for Manchester United’s Under-21s side during the first half of the 2013/14 campaign, Tom agreed to join Birmingham City on loan for the rest of the season.
Making his senior debut against Derby County, Tom suffered an ankle injury which would curtail his progress at St Andrew’s.
Tom then made his Manchester United First Team debut on 25th September 2014, as Louis van Gaal brought him off the bench to replace Angel Di Maria during the Premier League clash against West Ham United.
After being released by United in the summer of 2015, Tom signed a two-year deal with Sky Bet Championship side Rotherham United.
Tom left The Millers when his contract expired in July 2017 – having enjoyed loan spells at Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers respectively.
With the latter, Tom claimed a Sky Bet League One runners-up medal, as he helped the Lancashire outfit to promotion back to the Championship by making twenty-five appearances in all competitions.
A move to Indian Super League side ATK followed – managed by former Manchester United and England striker, Teddy Sheringham.
We are delighted that Tom has decided to join us here at Macclesfield FC and will be catching up with him shortly to discuss the move.
